My first pro content job was with All American Crafts Publishing in New Jersey. As the Managing Editor, I launched CraftWorks, a do-it-yourself how-to magazine, and also developed some successful spinoff specials.
In the mid '90s I also produced pro baseball and football magazines for MSC Sports Publishing, and fulfilled a dream of working at Yankee Stadium - as a sports editor, if not a shortstop.
When I was recruited to join Better Homes and Gardens Magazine, I moved to the publisher’s midwest offices. In five years, I led editorial teams producing crafts and home décor magazines and books. I ultimately embraced the Internet in ’99, when the publisher asked me to look into "New Media" and help launch a company website.
In January 2000, I moved to San Francisco and the center of the Internet Revolution. My first job was producing Homecraft.com. But the site closed not long after the launch party. I worked for a couple of visionaries with venture capital in Silicon Valley, and also landed a productive two-year role creating online investment content for VentureLink.com, a Silicon Valley Bank website.
Beginning in 2003, I enjoyed editorial work at DCP Custom Publishing, developing both print and Web publications for many California clients. I particularly liked producing magazines for the Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants (the free box seats were a nice perk). I also helped Bay Area clients create publications covering home remodeling trends, developed award-winning websites for healthcare organizations, and redesigned popular gourmet food websites.
In the mid-2000’s, I surfed the Web’s social networking wave. I produced channels for NetClearly.com (and its national magazine), featuring user-provided website reviews, built content for Backfence.com, a “citizen’s journalism” website, and helped launch SmartyCard.com, a social shopping website.
Since 2007, I've worked as a content strategist for eBay.com/PayPal.com, devising mobile apps for iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry, assisting with site-architecture upgrades, and helping publish a line of the company's e-books.
Today, I also serve as a content consultant for website start-ups and new magazine launches, maintaining my expertise and passion for the next big trend in publishing.
